What is PetTrueCost?

PetTrueCost is a free calculator that helps prospective and current pet owners in Canada understand the realistic first-year, annual, and lifetime cost of owning a dog or cat — broken down by breed, city/province, diet, insurance choice, and grooming needs. Most first-time owners budget only for the adoption fee; food, veterinary care, and insurance typically make up the majority of lifetime spending.

How Estimates Are Built

Figures combine typical Canadian veterinary and retail pricing, provincial tax rates, and breed-specific factors like average weight, food intake, lifespan, and known health-risk predispositions. They are estimates intended for planning purposes — see our Terms of Service for details, or the Privacy Policy for how we handle site data.
